Soul-Fed Mornings at Big Al's Deli

If you've ever walked into Big Al's on a hard morning, you already know: this isn't just breakfast. It's a Southern altar. A kitchen revival. A hug on a plate (or a real one!) when it feels like the human touch is running out after a pandemic and burying a parent and a decade long marriage. Big Al doesn't just feed the neighborhood -- he remembers the neighborhood, and makes even those visiting for an hour feel like red carpet royalty while they sip on sweet tea and sop up Big Al's spicy brown country sausage gravy with his signature black pepper Parmesan biscuits. If you come back, he'll remember your name, your mama's name, and what you like to eat. And if you don't know what you want? I'll bet he can order up exactly what you need.

The first time I visited Big Al's seven or so years ago during the worst phase of my life, I didn't know I needed soul food that tasted like belonging. But the biscuits that flakesd like happy memories and perfect lemonade, French toast like my Mama made it, shrimp and grits, and classic Big Al's breakfast -- they all reminded me that food can still feel like home, even when you're untethered.

I keep coming back to Big Al's in a city drowning in new restaurants because when you're navigating gried, sobriety, neurodivergence, or just a random hungover Wednesday -- you NEED places that don't ask you to pretend. Big Al has created one of those places. No curated lighting, no overhyped hashtags or mimosa towers...just real food, made with intention, and served with love. I've walked in for breakfast, teary-eyed and shaking, and left with hot sauce stains and a full heart. I've eaten alone and felt seen. I've brought friends, strangers, even my book draft on my laptop once, and all were welcome.

Come hungry. Leave fed. And tell Al that Delia Jo sent you.
