Alabama Beaches
Where my love for the coast began.
"Every food writer has an origin story. Mine began with a campground, the Gulf of Mexico, and parents who made sure we saw the ocean anyway." -- Delia Jo
Long before I became a food and travel writer, I was just a little girl counting down the days until our family camping trip to Alabama's Gulf Coast.
My parents always told me camping was simply the only way we could afford to visit the beach. Looking back, I wouldn't trade those memories for a luxury resort. Those campgrounds, salty breezes, and sandy feet became the backdrop for some of my happiest childhood moments.
Family legend has it I even slept through a hurricane there as a toddler.
Maybe that's why the sound of the waves has always felt more like home than something to fear.
Some people are mountain people.
I've always suspected I was built to be a mermaid.
Today, I return with a notebook instead of a sand bucket, searching for unforgettable meals, coastal stories, and the people who make Alabama's beaches feel like home. Along the way, I've discovered one more favorite tradition: Murder Point Oysters, my favorite oysters anywhere.
From Gulf Shores and Orange Beach to quiet sunrise walks and seafood shacks, this stretch of coastline isn't just another destination on my map.
It's where the story began.

My favorite oysters anywhere. Briny, beautifully cultivated, and a must for anyone exploring Alabama's Gulf Coast.
